Creative Marketing for a Student-Run Business

Marketing Intern → Marketing Director
Madison, WI | May 2023 – September 2024
Overview
StudentPrint is UW–Madison’s student-run print shop that provides design and printing services for the campus community. When I started at StudentPrint as a Marketing Intern, our team had lots of creative energy but needed clearer direction. As I transitioned to Marketing Director, I helped channel that creativity into refreshed branding, stronger campaigns, and new systems that brought consistency to our work. I worked across design, copywriting, campaign strategy, and mentorship while also overseeing a 9-person department to ensure StudentPrint’s marketing was both structured and student-focused.

Brand Refresh & Visual Identity

I led a full refresh of StudentPrint’s brand identity to modernize its look and unify its presence across platforms.

  • Introduced updated logos and a refreshed color palette (Slide 1–2)

  • Designed reusable templates for flyers, newsletters, and social posts (Slide 3)

  • Published brand guidelines to unify digital and print marketing (Slide 4–5)

Result: Established a professional, recognizable identity that positioned StudentPrint as both creative and credible.

Key Projects & Outcomes

Campaigns & Promotions

I designed and launched creative campaigns that connected with students and boosted engagement.

  • Designed flyers, posters, stickers, and digital assets for promotions like Valentine’s Day bundles and Back-to-School specials

  • Wrote promo copy and Instagram captions tailored to student audiences

  • Scripted signage and messaging for activations such as “Take Your Photo with Bucky”

  • Partnered with After Eight Productions on branded materials for cross-promotion

Result: Increased walk-in traffic and campus recognition while making StudentPrint feel more approachable and student-centered.

Digital & Print Content

I produced cross-channel creative content to engage students and campus partners.

  • Designed and wrote copy for 30+ Instagram posts and stories per semester

  • Created in-store signage, branded merchandise (tote bags, notepads), and large-format banners

  • Developed digital assets including recruitment flyers, promo graphics, and event collateral

  • Coordinated messaging with student orgs and campus departments for consistency

Result: Strengthened StudentPrint’s visibility across campus, unifying its digital and print presence into a cohesive brand experience.

Newsletter & CRM Campaigns

I modernized StudentPrint’s communications by introducing structured newsletters and CRM workflows.

  • Produced monthly newsletters to a subscriber base of 200+ students and campus partners, first in Mailchimp and later transitioning the team to Eloqua

  • Wrote campaign copy blending promotional offers with student-friendly storytelling

  • Tracked open and click-through rates, analyzing engagement to inform campaign adjustments

  • Trained team members on Eloqua to ensure sustainable CRM operations

Result: Boosted engagement and built StudentPrint’s first scalable email marketing system, aligning digital outreach with in-store promotions.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

I restructured StudentPrint’s marketing department into 3 specialized sub-teams: Graphic Design, Outreach, and Social Media. Oversaw 9 members, with 3 team leads reporting directly to me.

  • Designed and implemented the new structure, clarifying roles and responsibilities

  • Created workflows, trainings, and onboarding guides to streamline marketing operations

  • Mentored team leads in project management and creative execution, while coaching members in design, copy, and outreach skills

  • Balanced high-level strategy with day-to-day project oversight

Result: Transformed StudentPrint’s marketing into a structured, efficient department, improving campaign quality and ensuring sustainable practices beyond my term.

Reflection

StudentPrint was where I learned how to connect creativity with structure. I didn’t just just design graphics or write captions — I built systems, mentored a department, and turned ideas into lasting campaigns. Leading campaigns, shaping a refreshed brand identity, and training my team showed me how creativity and strategy intersect. That balance of building stories and systems continues to guide how I approach marketing today.
